CIU Alumnus Made Big Impact on Small Town

Tony Gibson in the 1964 yearbook

He was described as the “heart of Darien in the heart of Darien.” For 36 years, Tony Gibson was pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Darien, Conn. before his death in April. But it was at his memorial service in July that his impact on the town of nearly 20,000 people may have been best measured. The pews at Calvary Baptist filled up quickly as the late-comers sat on folding chairs.

Gibson was a 1964 graduate of Columbia International University, then called Columbia Bible College. After serving at churches in Queens, N.Y. and his native Brooklyn, N.Y., he answered the call to lead Calvary Baptist until his retirement in 2010.
