Abbott Honored for Character

CIU Athletics Director Kim Abbott holds the Game Plan 4 LIFE Award.

Columbia International University Athletics Director Kim Abbott has been recognized for her Christian character by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Abbott was awarded the Game Plan 4 LIFE Female Athletic Staff Character Award at the NCCAA Hall of Fame Banquet held during the NCCAA’s national convention in May. CIU is a member of the NCCAA.

The Character Award goes to student-athletes and athletics staff “who epitomize the Christian character qualities of love, integrity, faith and excellence.” Abbott was nominated for the award by her staff of coaches.

CIU men’s soccer coach James Whitaker describes Abbott as “a coach's AD,” working tirelessly to make sure her coaches and players have everything they need to be successful. He noted that Abbott does not lead from above others; instead, she humbly serves others. Whitaker also says that Abbott strives daily to live and work in an ethical manner consistent with a follower of Jesus, doing things the right way and encouraging others to do the same.

Jud Brooker, CIU cross country and track coach, says Abbott lives CIU's motto of "To Know Him and to Make Him Known," and desires for her teams to be successful so they have a greater platform for the gospel. He describes her as a true professional with an outstanding reputation.

CIU women’s basketball coach Tammy Holder says Abbott is never too busy for counseling opportunities or sharing her faith, adding that she makes time to fellowship with student-athletes, other students, faculty and staff.

Abbott says she is humbled that her coaches nominated her for the award.

"We are a team, we work well as a team, and we support each other," Abbott said. "I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that they feel I am worthy to be nominated. And then on top of that, the NCCAA selected me!  What an honor!"

Abbott made CIU history in 2010 when she became the school’s first athletics director. In 2012, CIU played its first intercollegiate athletics competition since the school was founded in 1923.
